TNT Web Media - Web design, programming and branding

Welcome! TNT is the portfolio of Tom Jenkins, web designer, code monkey and brand freak. Take a look around, stretch your legs, and then maybe drop me a line...

Recent work:

  • Elizabeth McNamara - Artist and Actor WIP

Elizabeth McNamara - Artist and Actor

Elizabeth is a talented artist from Chester who paints portraits and other pieces in the style of Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud. TNT is working with her to create an engaging, fun showcase site which she will also be taking commissions through.

  • Luke Unsworth Photography WIP

    Luke Unsworth Photography

Trained in documentary photography and filmmaking, Luke received a prize in the Guardian's David Hodge Award for young photographers in 1993. It's not hard to see why. His photos are honest, thought provoking, and amusing. He deserves a great platform upon which to show his work, and we know when we launch (soon) that's what he'll have.

  • Black Country Dolls WIP

    Black Country Dolls

The Black Country Museums and Art Galleries recently opened up their online collections API, and invited developers to come up with exciting and fun ways to access and manipulate the data, with a view to creating engaging new ways for people to get into the collections. My answer: a remixable mannequin drawing on the huge range of clothing objects on file. Users can create their own Victorian villain, Tudor tart, or create something entirely new. Coming soon!

  • Class Act Theatre School

    Class Act Theatre School

Class Act, the most popular community arts school in Blackpool had a new corporate ID, a shiny new charity number and now they have their new website. Designed with with the company's logo and brand guidelines in mind, the site tried to appeal to the children who already go to the school and those who might want to join.

Class Act is run by local Rachel Sykes and is a place where students can learn singing, dancing and drama skills, and rehearse, as the slogan goes, for their future. I'm proud to add this to the list of 'good guys' in this portfolio, and look forward to seeing them push onwards and upwards, having helped them set up their various social media channels. Good luck Rachel and Class Act!

  • Maldives Whaleshark Research Programme

    Maldives Whaleshark Research Programme

MWSRP are a fantastic organisation who 'exist to conduct perpetual whale shark research projects and to foster community focused conservation initiatives within the Maldives.' We worked with them to develop a site that reflects the beauty of the magnificent creatures they are protecting, the whale sharks, and their precious habitat, the ocean. Don't worry, they don't bite!

  • Offa's Press

    Offa's Press

Simon Fletcher, manager of Offa's Press, says he likens the act of writing poetry 'to carving wood - slow and thoughtful'. We've taken over the social media and marketing side of operations for them and while it's considered and thoughtful, it's never slow!

  • Job Splitters

    Job Splitters

Mike Chapman had been on volunteer placements. He knew what the score was - there are plenty of great opportunities for students and graduates out there, but the most well-promoted ones are inevitably the most expensive ones. Student budgets being what they are, Mike decided to launch Job Splitters, a site dedicated to helping students find the best work experience for them, with a focus on pursuing hobbies and passions whilst building up a great CV, all without breaking the bank.

The centrepiece of the site is the 'explore' facility, which lets students find their ideal placement by narrowing down by interest, location, and placement type. The site also features an advanced search for those who want to specify every detail, from placement duration to pay.

  • Voice Care Network UK

    Voice Care Network UK

VCN's mission is: 'To help people keep their voices healthy and to communicate effectively'. An organisation that helps people communicate effectively would be stinting if it didn't have a clear-speaking, easy-to-use website, wouldn't it? The Voice Care Network thought so and enlisted my help in building their corporate website through which they could present case studies, reports, helpful information and take bookings for workshops.

  • Super Tux Kart

    Super Tux Kart

Lunch breaks often aren't lunch breaks. Admin work or last minute touch-ups to a favourite project are often shoulder to shoulder with a quick sandwich. But sometimes there really is nothing that needs to be fiddled with: no urgent emails to be sent or tests to be run.

The March weather not providing much in the way of sunshine, Super Tux Kart - a free, open-source Mario Kart-like game - provided a brief distraction from the noon drizzle. When I saw 'Webmaster needed' on their news page, I felt obliged to lend a hand. The current site was functional, but lacking pizazz, and failing to get across the fact that this was the website of an incredibly fun game.

There was however, a compromise to be met. The site runs on MediaWiki, (the same software that powers Wikipedia) and is, in spirit, a platform for developer discussion and formal articles about the game's development. Thus the layout must be a wide, clean space for article text and pictures while keeping a friendly appearance for visitors. We think the end result is quite pleasing, but, perfectionists that we are, we'll be listening for community feedback and will be on hand to make any tweaks that the users might like to see.

If you're having trouble finding things to do in your lunch break, may I suggest burning rubber round over 20 tracks with the choice of more than 10 different characters?

  • From the Acorn

    From the Acorn

From the Acorn was a summer writers' group run by students at Lancaster University. They needed a logo to promote the group on flyers and other printed material, something compact and funky.
